Lessons in Leadership: What Mikayla Cecere Has Learned in Her Journey with Flexco

Mikayla Cecere

Department: National Marketing Manager - Australia
Flexco Family Member Since: 2021

When working with a company for a few years, it can be easy to become complacent. The day-to-day tasks become mundane, and you can feel like you are on autopilot. Are we all guilty of this from time-to-time? Sure. But one thing remains consistent; those who strive at Flexco, thrive at Flexco.

For proof of this sentiment, look no further than Mikayla Cecere.

A Strong Start with Flexco

Although Mikayla was nervous to start her role as Flexco Australia’s Marketing Coordinator, her hiring manager made her onboarding experience a warm and welcoming one. In fact, she was gifted a small pot plant for her desk and taken out to lunch with her team on her first day. It was this kind of thoughtful introduction that quickly set Flexco apart from her previous work experiences.

Having worked for a law firm and a marketing agency out of college, she was all too familiar with toxic work environments and high employee turnover. As a result, Flexco’s employee-focused culture immediately stood out to her.

“One of the reasons I was drawn to Flexco was the longevity of its employees, with many serving over 15 years. That level of stability speaks volumes about the company’s culture and career growth opportunities.”

Another reason as to why Flexco’s employees like Mikayla have seen early success is because of programs like Flexco University.

By providing students with access to on-site, virtual, and in-class training, new hires are given access to everything they need to get up to speed quickly. In turn, the knowledge that they gain allows them to feel a sense of confidence in their role and gives them a head start on their day-to-day tasks.

Rising Through the Ranks

Mikayla’s journey at Flexco hasn’t stopped at her Marketing Coordinator role. In early review meetings with her manager, she expressed an interest in leadership; this was met with support every step of the way.

After three years of diligent work with the company, she was offered the role of Marketing and Sales Analyst. However, Mikayla saw an opportunity to better align her skills and responsibilities with the company’s needs. So, rather than simply accepting the new role, Mikayla advocated for herself, explaining that a Marketing Manager title might be a better fit for the work she was doing.

Flexco’s leadership team listened, recognizing her hard work and value to the organization. As a result, Mikayla was then promoted to her current title: National Sales & Marketing Manager for Flexco Australia.

“I knew that I wanted to pursue some form of leadership, so it was quite a relief when my managers encouraged me to take that next step,” Mikayla said. “I’ve been at roles in the past where it felt like they wanted to keep me at a certain level no matter how I tried, but it has been the exact opposite at Flexco.”

A Support System Fosters Growth

One of the defining aspects of Mikayla’s growth at Flexco has been the support she received from her managers. Over time, Mikayla has gradually been given more responsibility and autonomy that has made her more comfortable making key decisions.

In her first year, she learned how to manage the department’s budget. By her second year, she was responsible for creating the entire marketing plan, with her manager offering guidance and oversight.

By the time her third year rolled around, Mikayla had taken full ownership of the marketing department in Australia, handling everything from budgeting to campaign execution. She was also invited to participate in management meetings, further establishing her role as a leader within the company.

“I have a lot more responsibility now,” Mikayla said. “I’m in charge of the marketing department here in Australia, and I like having the freedom to make decisions about our budget, the campaigns we run, and the people we work with. That level of trust and accountability is something that has been great for my development.”

Flexco didn’t just hand Mikayla these opportunities though; they actively encouraged her to seek out further learning and educational opportunities. Whether it is through secondary learning courses, internal training programs, or giving her the chance to travel with our territory managers to gain on-site experience, Flexco has continually encouraged Mikayla to grow and succeed.

Becoming A Cultural Ambassador: A Pivotal Step in Leadership

Mikayla’s leadership development hasn’t been confined to her core marketing role. As a Cultural Ambassador for Flexco, she has played an integral role in shaping both Australia and the entire company’s culture.

By taking charge of organizing internal events, running initiatives, and working closely with both local and international colleagues, Mikayla has improved Flexco’s workplace environment, helping to foster a sense of belonging across the organization.

“I think the Cultural Ambassador role was pivotal in my transition to leadership,” Mikayla explained. “It gave me the chance to work on improving company buy-in and actively learn about driving initiatives that bring people together.”

Mikayla’s involvement as a Cultural Ambassador has allowed her to do something truly unique: be part of a global team. Through interaction with team members from around the world, Mikayla has gained a broader perspective on leadership and team dynamics, further helping her take part in and thrive in a leadership role beyond her job title.

A Bright Future at Flexco

For Mikayla, her journey at Flexco has been impressive thus far, but it is only the beginning. With ongoing support from her team and Flexco’s continued commitment to her personal and professional development, we are excited to see what the future holds.

As she looks to the future, Mikayla remains driven by her passion for leadership and her desire to keep moving forward.

“The hardest step is wanting it,” reports Mikayla. “Once you know what you want, Flexco is behind you every step of the way.”
